Look at her expression! AI generated by the author.

The world feels like it's held together with duct tape and wishful thinking right now. Every time I open my phone, it's another fresh hell served up with a side of outrage and a garnish of existential dread.

Here I am, a 48-year-old woman sitting in my disaster of a home office slash craft room slash closet slash dumping room, surrounded by psychology textbooks, wondering if I've completely lost my mind.

Maybe I have. But being middle-aged in 2025, we've seen enough shit to know that waiting for the world to make sense is like waiting for your teenager to voluntarily clean their room. It's not happening.

So what do we do instead? We show up anyway.

Subscribe now

The Neuroscience of Not Giving Up

I'm not talking about that insufferable motivational poster bullshit. "Good vibes only," and "Manifest your dreams," while the rest of us are just trying to manifest clean laundry.

I'm talking about the messy, imperfect, "I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm doing it anyway," kind of showing up. The kind where you decide to change your entire career path after 30 years and go back to school because you want to help kids work through trauma, even though your own life might qualify as a deleted scene from a disaster movie.

Research in cognitive behavioral psychology reveals an interesting aspect of resilience. It's not actually about being tough or positive. It's about continuing to engage with life even when engagement feels pointless.

Neural pathways literally strengthen when we choose action over paralysis, even small actions.

Viktor Frankl wrote about this from a concentration camp. He observed that survival often came down to finding meaning in suffering, rather than escaping it. The prisoners who maintained some sense of purpose by helping others, planning for the future, or creating something were more likely to survive.

I think about this while I'm studying developmental trauma theory at my kitchen table, surrounded by the detritus of family life.

Why Gen X Got the Training We Needed

We grew up during the Cold War, thinking nuclear annihilation was a Tuesday possibility. We survived the '90s recession, 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, a global pandemic, and approximately 45-47 different ways the internet convinced us democracy was ending.

We're like emotional Navy SEALs at this point.

As kids, we realized early that adults don't have it all together. We learned how to entertain ourselves with a stick and our imagination. Most importantly, we understood that when the world gets weird, you don't wait for someone else to fix it.

This isn't nostalgia. It's pattern recognition.

Middle-Aged Attachment Theory

Developmental psychologist John Bowlby's work on attachment theory suggests that our early relationships create internal working models for how we navigate the world. But here's what gets overlooked: these models can be revised throughout life.

Middle age might actually be optimal for this kind of revision. We have enough life experience to recognize dysfunctional patterns, enough cognitive development to think abstractly about change, and enough urgency to actually do something about it.

When I decided to study psychology, it wasn't because I had my own trauma figured out. It was because I realized that understanding the mechanics of human resilience might be more useful than just surviving my own mess.

There's something powerful about deciding that instead of just witnessing the chaos, you're going to become someone who understands how healing actually works.

Mama needs coffee... you buying?

This Substack will always be free, but let's face it—coffee is a non-negotiable expense. If you enjoy my work, please consider clicking that button to help a girl out and keep the caffeine flowing!

You: The Swiss Army Knife

A middle-aged mom (with or without professional therapy training) is like being a Swiss Army knife in a world full of single-purpose tools. You have already encountered more human psychology on a typical Tuesday than most people do in a month.

You know how to de-escalate a toddler meltdown, negotiate with a moody teenager, and convince yourself that yes, you really do need to buy more storage containers. You understand that healing happens in the mundane moments. In showing up consistently when it's boring and hard.

The literature on post-traumatic growth suggests that meaning-making often emerges from helping others navigate similar challenges. Perhaps that's why so many of us are drawn to careers in the helping professions later in life. We've accumulated enough scar tissue to be useful.

The Ripple Effect Research

Social psychologists have documented something called "behavioral contagion," which refers to the way individual actions spread through social networks. When you decide to do something constructive instead of just complaining, other people notice. Your kids see that Mom didn't just talk about problems but instead learned how to address them systematically.

Your friends start asking what you're studying, and suddenly everyone's discussing mental health instead of just doom-scrolling together. Strangers in your psychology classes realize they're not the only ones who decided that midlife was the perfect time to completely change direction.

This isn't wishful thinking. It's documented social science.

Hope Economics

Look, I'm not saying any of this makes financial sense. Going back to school while managing a household with multiple health crises and approximately zero extra bandwidth violates every principle of practical resource management.

But economist Amartya Sen's work on capabilities theory suggests that human flourishing isn't just about maximizing resources—it's about developing the capacity to live the kind of life you have reason to value.

Sometimes, the most important investments are those that expand what's possible, not what's immediately profitable.

Sometimes it means looking at a world full of hurting people and deciding you want to understand the science of helping, not just the art of watching.

Choice Architecture

Every day, we face what behavioral economists call "choice architecture"—the context in which decisions are made. The default option is usually to let the chaos win. To stay stuck in cycles of outrage and helplessness. To believe that individual actions don't matter in the face of systemic breakdown.

But defaults can be changed.

We can design our choices differently. Make our corner of the world gradually more functional. Become people who don't just survive the chaos but help others navigate through it.

The world doesn't need us to be perfect. It needs us to be competent. It needs us to show up with skills, not just good intentions.

What are you learning that might matter? What's your version of going back to school at 48? Each one was filled with lengthy introductions by my new professors.

It’s ‘explore week’ where we get to examine our courses in detail before actually being tied to a schedule. When one professor wrote that we can work at our own pace (early submissions if we choose) but doesn’t accept late work, at all, ever, for any reason, no matter what… I began to question my own sanity.

The next 16 weeks will have me realizing that I’ve (foolishly?) taken on four advanced classes. Last semester, I had 8 weeks to barrel through two intro-level courses. It was tough, but not nearly as menacing as I’d thought it would be. This morning, panic set in… and I thought yesterday was bad!

But now? Like, who the hell do I think I am? I’m working full-time, going to college full-time, and still trying to take care of my home, my family, and myself. Some would call me crazy.

I don’t care what they say. I’m a damned superhero.

I want to be. I am the only child of two workaholic business owners, and once they decided I was old enough not to have to take the bus to Grandma’s after school, I became this feral, self-sustained force to be reckoned with.

And then, I lost her somehow.

For the past 20 years or so, I have been a slave to my computer. Trading my time for money. Making actual millions of dollars for others while barely scraping by myself, trying to build something sustainable on the side. I feel like my ass is so flat because I’ve been sitting on it so much of my life.

I don’t want this anymore. Some of these domains have been renewing automatically for decades, quietly charging my credit card $20-30 each year while I told myself, "someday I'll build something amazing with this."

But here's the thing about someday: it has a way of never arriving when you're drowning.

Today I sat in front of my computer, staring at a list of 57 domains I own, while my debt payments eat up 70% of my income. The math was brutal and simple. I'm paying nearly $1,000 a year to keep dreams alive that I don't have the time, energy, or frankly, money to pursue. (All in all, I’ve canceled about $3000 in unused services related to all of this, too.)

The Dreams I'm Releasing

Some of these hurt more than others.
bohosidehustle.com
was going to be my side business empire.
totalprintables.com
was my passive income goldmine.
wordsonthewalls.com
was going to be my inspirational quote kingdom. Each one had a whole business plan in my head, some even on digital paper, complete with revenue projections and launch timelines.

But you know what none of them had? Actual progress. Actual customers. Actual income.

They were expensive hope.

The Mathematics of Letting Go

When you're in a financial crisis, every dollar matters. The $700+ I was spending annually on domain renewals could instead go toward paying down credit cards that charge 28-30% interest. The opportunity cost of holding onto "someday maybe" was literally costing me hundreds in interest charges.

It took me hours to go through each domain, turn off auto-renew, and list them for sale with realistic prices. No, it shouldn’t have taken that long. Yes, it was because it was emotionally difficult for me.

Some I priced aggressively high - if someone wants to buy
diabeticmama.com
, they can pay $999 for it. Others I listed at the minimum $50 that the platform allows.

Will they sell? Probably not. The domain market is flooded with other people's abandoned dreams. But at least I'm not paying to maintain them while they sit unused.

What "Failure" Actually Feels Like

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

AI-gen image of me. But it doesn’t look like she’s 48. I tried, y’all.

I thought letting go of these domains would feel like giving up, like admitting defeat. Instead, it feels like taking back control.

For years, these unused domains have been a source of low-level anxiety. Every renewal notice was a reminder of projects I hadn't started, businesses I hadn't built, and dreams I hadn't pursued. They were digital clutter taking up mental space I desperately needed for the projects that matter.

Now? I have three core parts that represent my actual goals for the future: my writing hub, my creative business, and my community for midlife women. Everything else is gone or going.

The relief is immediate and profound.

The Dreams Worth Keeping

This isn't about giving up on all dreams - it's about getting honest about which dreams are actually serving you and which ones are just expensive distractions.

The domains I kept? They're connected to work I'm actively doing. Writing I'm actually publishing. Communities I'm genuinely building. They're not "someday" projects - they're "today" realities. The others were some that belong to family, or there to protect branding.

The ones I released were beautiful possibilities that I was never going to have the bandwidth to pursue. And that's okay. Having ideas doesn't obligate you to pursue every single one of them, especially when pursuing them is literally costing you money you don't have.

The Math of Moving Forward

Between canceling unused subscriptions, consolidating business tools, and releasing these domains, I've freed up nearly $300 a month. That's $3,600 a year that was going toward maintaining possibilities instead of paying down debt.

Is it enough to solve all my financial problems? No. But it's enough to start breathing again. It's enough to stop the bleeding while I figure out the bigger picture.

Permission to Let Go

If you're reading this while looking at your own collection of unused domains, abandoned projects, or expensive dreams that aren't serving you anymore, I want you to know: it's okay to let them go.

You're not a failure for admitting that you took on more than you could handle. You're not giving up on your dreams - you're making space for the ones that actually matter.

Sometimes the most courageous thing you can do is admit that a dream isn't working and release it with gratitude.

Thank it for the hope it gave you, for the lessons it taught you, and then let it go so something better can take its place.

The $700 I was spending every damn year on domain renewals is now going toward financial stability. The mental energy I was spending on guilt about unused projects is now available for actual work.

And you know what? That feels like the opposite of giving up. That feels like growing up.

Holy shit… we can still do that at this age?

If you're dealing with your own financial overwhelm or need to clean house on digital dreams that aren't serving you, know that you're not alone. 7 digital survival skills that will save your sanity, your GPA, and possibly your marriage (because nothing tests a relationship like having a meltdown over a PDF that won't Master the Art of the Browser Tab Ballet

Remember when we thought having three windows open at once was multitasking? Now you need to keep your course portal, the reading materials, the assignment instructions, AND your note-taking app all open simultaneously without losing your mind.

The survival skill: Learn keyboard shortcuts for switching between tabs (Ctrl+Tab is your friend) and for the love of all that's holy, bookmark everything important. Your browser bookmarks should look like a well-organized filing cabinet, not a digital junk drawer.

Pro tip: If you're constantly losing tabs, try using different browser windows for different classes. Psychology in Chrome, Statistics in Firefox. It sounds crazy, but so did learning to text with T9, and we conquered that too.

Thanks for reading SoulShift! Screenshot Everything Like Your Grade Depends on It (Because It Does)

That assignment that was there yesterday? Gone.

The feedback your professor left? Vanished.

The quiz you swear you submitted? The system has no record of it.

Welcome to online learning, where everything is made up and the points don't seem to matter.

The survival skill: Screenshot EVERYTHING. Assignment instructions, submission confirmations, your completed work before you hit submit, error messages, gradebook entries - everything. Create a folder on your desktop called "CYA Screenshots" and use it religiously.

Why this matters: When (not if) the system glitches and your professor looks at you like you're making excuses, you'll have proof. You're not being paranoid; you're being prepared.

3. Decode the Mystery of Digital Note-Taking

Here's what nobody tells you: You can't highlight a PDF the same way you highlighted your textbooks in 1995. And those video lectures? There's no margin to write in.

It's like trying to take notes on an Etch-a-Sketch while riding a roller coaster.

The survival skill: Find ONE system that works and stick with it. Whether it's copying everything into a Word document, using a digital note-taking app, or printing everything out and going full analog warrior - consistency beats perfection.

Reality check: Your system doesn't have to be Instagram-worthy. It just has to work for YOUR brain. If that means printing everything and using actual highlighters like it's 1992, do it. Martha Stewart's organizational Pinterest board isn't grading your papers.

4. Learn to Navigate the Discussion Board Without Losing Your Soul

Discussion boards are where 18-year-olds write discombobulated stories about topics they googled five minutes ago, and you're supposed to "engage meaningfully" with their insights. It's like being trapped in a never-ending group project with people who think citing Wikipedia is groundbreaking research.

And don’t get me started on how incredibly obvious it is when they’re using AI to write everything. If you haven’t figured out the AI tritespeake yet… You will. You will.

The survival skill: Write your response in a separate document first, then copy and paste it in. This prevents the heartbreak of typing a thoughtful response only to have it disappear when you accidentally hit the wrong button.

Bonus wisdom: You usually don't have to respond to every single post. My professors have all put their requirements into each week’s course announcements. Sometimes it’s one or two, other times it’s three. So check there first, and then find two or three that actually make sense, engage genuinely, and call it done.

Quality over quantity - a lesson we learned from our CD collections.

5. Master the File Naming Game Before It Masters You

"Essay.docx," "Essay final.docx," "Essay FINAL FINAL.docx," "Essay FINAL FINAL FOR REAL THIS TIME.docx" - sound familiar? I swear I just heard you giggle out of guilt.

Digital file management is like laundry: ignore it long enough and suddenly you're drowning.

The survival skill: Develop a naming system from day one. Something like "PSYC101_Week3_Discussion_YourName.docx" might seem excessive, but future you (at 2 AM trying to find that one assignment) will worship current you.

The harsh truth: Your computer's search function is not as smart as you think it is. "That paper I wrote about motivation" isn't going to help you find "Untitled Document 47.docx."

6. Embrace the Power of Copy and Paste (It's Not Cheating, It's Organizing)

All those course materials scattered across different modules, hidden in PDFs, buried in video transcripts - it's like they deliberately made it hard to find anything. You're not lazy for wanting everything in one place; you're efficient.

And maybe tied to the good ol’ days of having a different notebook for each subject. Gee, whoever thought that was a bad enough idea? Not it!

The survival skill: Create a master document for each class with all the important information. Copy assignment instructions, paste in key readings, and note important dates. Think of it as making your own course packet, like professors used to do when they cared about student well-being.

Side note: I do this myself with Notion. I’m obsessed. More on this another day.

Why this works: When you're studying for finals at midnight (because that's when inspiration strikes), you won't be clicking through seventeen different modules trying to remember where that one crucial concept was explained.

7. Build Your Tech Support Network (No, Not Your Teenager)

Your kids are great at TikTok and Snapchat, but they're just as confused as you are when it comes to academic technology. You need grown-up tech support from people who understand that not everything can be solved by "just Google it."

The survival skill: Connect with other adult students in your classes. They're dealing with the same technological torture and are much more likely to help you figure out why the plagiarism checker is having an existential crisis about your perfectly original work.

The real talk: IT support at most colleges is staffed by people who assume you are either stupid or you don’t understand things like "clear your cache" and "try a different browser." There’s a really good chance you do, because your generation invented the internet. But find your people - the other adults who remember when software came with actual instruction manuals.

The Bottom Line

You are smart enough for college.

You are tech-savvy enough for online learning.

The system is just poorly designed, not a reflection of your abilities. You figured out how to record TV shows on a VCR while watching something else at the same time – you can definitely master online learning.

The secret isn't becoming a tech genius overnight. It's developing systems that work with your brain, your schedule, and your life. Because at the end of the day, you're not just earning a degree - you're proving to yourself (and maybe to your kids) that it's never too late to go after what you want.

Now go ahead and conquer that discussion board. And remember: screenshot everything.

Thanks for reading SoulShift! It wasn't some beautiful moment of clarity while watching the sunrise with my perfectly organized planner and ethically sourced coffee.

It was me, sitting in the disaster of my home office at 2 AM, surrounded by candy wrappers, paper plates from dinner, and a hugenormous mason jar of iced tea. Apparently, I thought going back to college at 48 was a brilliant idea. Dishes rotting in the sink. Dust bunnies morphing into dust elephants. Approximately 47 loads of laundry that have achieved sentience and are now plotting against me.

My husband's disability means he can't work. The financial pressure is real. My 12-year-old daughter fights anxiety every single day with the kind of courage that would make Navy SEALs weep, but she still needs her mom to show up. My father's health is unstable at best. My own body is sending me increasingly passive-aggressive messages about not being 25 anymore.

And my job? Let's say you’re vegan, and the only thing you can do to pay the bills is work in a meat processing plant. That’s me.

But here's the plot twist nobody tells you about midlife: sometimes the explosion comes right before the breakthrough.

The Great Midlife Recalibration

I used to think midlife was supposed to be about having it all figured out. You know, the whole "established career, well-behaved children, Pinterest-worthy home, and maybe a hobby that doesn't involve hiding in your car to eat gas station candy" fantasy.

Instead, I'm learning that midlife is actually about something much more interesting. It's about finally getting honest about what actually matters and what's just been taking up space in your life, like that exercise bike you bought in 2019.

The thing is, I'm tired of trying to keep all the balls in the air. I'm tired of pretending that productivity hacks and the right planner will somehow make my life manageable. I'm tired of acting like I have it together when my idea of meal planning is checking to see if we have enough cereal for dinner.

But I'm not tired of the mess itself. Because here's what I've figured out: the mess is where the good stuff happens.

The mess is where you learn that your daughter's anxiety doesn't make her broken. It makes her incredibly aware of the world around her.

The mess is where you discover that your husband's disability hasn't diminished him. It's revealed strengths you never knew he had.

The mess is where you finally stop apologizing for not being perfect and start getting curious about what you might actually be good at.

<picture></picture>

What SoulShift Actually Means

SoulShift isn't about becoming a completely different person. Thank God, because I don't have the energy for that level of renovation.

It's about finally acknowledging that the life you're living right now—the one with the clutter and the overwhelm and the constant feeling that you're one minor crisis away from completely losing it—isn't a rough draft. This is it. This is your life.

And it's about asking yourself: Okay, so now what?

For me, the answer has been surprisingly simple: I want to help people solve problems. Real problems. Not the "how to organize your spice rack" kind of problems (though honestly, if someone wants to tackle my spice situation, I'm listening), but the "how do you navigate loving someone with chronic illness while maintaining your own sanity" kind of problems.

The "how do you support an anxious child without becoming a helicopter parent" kind of problems. The "how do you figure out what you want to be when you grow up when you're already grown up" kind of problems.

I want to share the solutions I find, the strategies that actually work, and the resources that don't require you to completely overhaul your life or spend money you don't have.

The Soft Girl Era (But Make It Gen X)

I keep seeing this "soft girl era" trend on social media, and while I appreciate the sentiment, I think we need a Gen X version. Because our soft girl era isn't about perfect morning routines and aesthetic everything. It's about finally permitting ourselves to stop grinding quite so hard. It's about recognizing that we've been carrying the weight of everyone else's expectations for decades, and maybe it's time to set some of that down.

My soft girl era looks like saying no to things that don't serve me, even when it feels uncomfortable.

It looks like prioritizing my health without feeling guilty about it.

It looks like pursuing work that feels meaningful instead of just settling for whatever pays the bills.

It looks like creating a home that works for my family instead of trying to make my family work for some imaginary home standard.

And yes, it looks like restarting a Substack that focuses on actual solutions instead of just documenting the chaos.

What You Can Expect Going Forward

Here's what SoulShift is going to be about:

Real solutions for real problems. I'm not interested in surface-level advice that assumes you have unlimited time, money, and energy. I want to share the stuff that actually works when you're managing multiple crises and running on fumes.

Practical strategies for the overwhelmed. How do you support a child with anxiety? How do you navigate the healthcare system when you're dealing with multiple family members' health issues? How do you go back to school as an adult without completely losing your mind? These are the questions I'm living with, and I'm betting you are too.

Resources that don't require you to become a different person. I'm not going to tell you to wake up at 4 AM or start a gratitude journal (though if those things work for you, more power to you). I'm going to share the tools and strategies that work for people who are already stretched thin.

Honest conversations about midlife. Because nobody warned us that 40-something would involve this much juggling, and we need to talk about it.

A little bit of humor, because otherwise we'd all be crying. And sometimes we need to cry too, and that's okay.

The Bottom Line

I'm not rebranding because I've figured everything out.

I'm rebranding because I've finally accepted that I probably never will, and that's actually liberating. Instead of trying to perfect my life, I want to help make all of our lives a little more manageable.

SoulShift is about the recognition that we're not the same people we were in our 20s or 30s, and that's not a failure. It's evolution. It's about embracing the fact that sometimes the most profound changes happen not when we're trying to improve ourselves, but when we're just trying to survive with a little more grace.

So if you're here for the journey—the messy, imperfect, sometimes hilarious journey of figuring out who you are in the second half of your life—then welcome to SoulShift. We're going to figure this out together, one practical solution at a time.

And if you're wondering whether this means I'm giving up coffee, let me be clear: I'm 48, going to college, raising a teenager, and managing a household with multiple health crises. The coffee isn't going anywhere.

The star of the show is you, figuring out how to live your actual life instead of the life you thought you were supposed to have.

Let's do this thing.

P.S. - If you've been following along with Coffee, Chaos, and Catharsis, thank you. Your comments, shares, and messages have meant more to me than you know. This isn't goodbye to any of that—it's just expansion. We're taking everything that worked and making it bigger, more useful, and hopefully a little more fun.

P.P.S. - Yes, my house is still a disaster. No, I don't have a cleaning schedule. Yes, I'm still working on it. We'll figure that out too.

Thanks for reading SoulShift! to do, forever wishing I had more time for them and forever beating myself up for not doing them.

The end of the year always feels like this. A mix of reflection and regret sprinkled with a dash of hope. But this time, I’m done with just thinking about what I want to change. This time, I’m ready to do it.

And I’m bringing you with me.

Share Coffee, Chaos, and Catharsis

It’s Time to Build the Puzzle

Here’s the truth: All too often, life feels like one of those 1,000-piece puzzles, and the problem is that you only have 900 pieces, and half of them are from a completely different box.

But instead of giving up and letting those random pieces collect dust, I’m going to figure out how to make them fit. Because that’s what we do, right? We adapt. We try. We start.

And that’s what this year is going to be about—starting and sticking to it.

What to Expect

Over the next year, I’m using parts of this substack to document my journey of putting the puzzle together. I’m in this with you:

I’ll share the resources I’m using (and whether they actually work).

I’ll track my progress—successes, failures, and the inevitable detours.

I’ll write honestly about what it feels like to keep going when it’s tempting to quit.

Some of it will be funny. Some of it will probably be messy. But all of it will be real.

I’m aiming for weekly posts and daily notes for minor updates and thoughts. Think of the stack as the main event and the notes as the behind-the-scenes reel.

But don’t worry, this won’t become a one-topic publication. I’ll still write about other things when inspiration strikes—because life isn’t just goals and progress charts. It’s everything in between. figuring out ‘What’s next?’ can feel like a surprise kick to the gut with Ralph Macchio’s foot. For those of us who grew up in the era of watching MTV, surviving latchkey afternoons, and being told we could have it all—the surprise hits a little differently.

Subscribe for free to get notified whenever we post something new:

Many of us grew up hearing that if we worked hard, went to college, and checked the right boxes, our futures would be secure—stable careers, happy families, and maybe a house with a yard. It sounded so simple.

I don’t know who decided to sell us the idea that adulthood was just a series of checks on a list—college, career, house, retirement—but I’d like to go back and ask for a refund. I’ve checked all the boxes, and all I got was this existential crisis, a bad back, and a mortgage that feels like an anchor.

Reality Bites

Here we are, smack dab in midlife, and it’s more complicated than we ever imagined. For a generation that grew up untamed—wandering neighborhoods unsupervised until the streetlights came on, getting survival skills from The Goonies, and microwaving food combinations we invented off the top of our heads—why are we now so paralyzed by decision-making?

We were resourceful back then. We could MacGyver anything with scotch tape and a paperclip. Now? We can’t decide if we should change careers, refinance the house, or just eat a bowl of cereal in bed and call it a day.

Maybe it’s because we’re choosing between:

Switching careers at 47 or sticking it out until we qualify for the Social Security we’ll probably never see.

Paying the mortgage or convincing ourselves that avocado toast is a retirement plan.

Finally pursuing that dream we shelved back in our 20s or staying practical and quietly dying inside.

<div playground equipment like stunt doubles while nobody batted an eye. Now, I sneeze too hard, and suddenly, I’m wondering if I need a diaper and a week of traction. Decisions.

Here’s the thing: We’re not alone in this.

Despite how isolating midlife can feel—stuck between kids who need us and parents who now rely on us—we’ve still got that Gen X grit. We were the last generation to grow up without Google. If we could survive the horror of getting kicked off AOL because someone picked up the phone, we can handle a midlife existential crisis.

We were scrappy, resourceful, and self-reliant because we had to be. And while we might not have it all figured out like we were promised, we still know how to find each other when the going gets tough.

The internet—the same one we used to connect via chat rooms and dial-up—is now our greatest ally. Forget the doomscrolling for a minute; we’ve got each other here.

The Never-Ending Game

Making your way through midlife feels like playing an endless game of Oregon Trail. You’re trying to move forward, but all you’ve got are dwindling resources and the constant threat of dysentery.

But here’s the key: you’re not in the wagon alone. We’re here, fumbling through decisions, rediscovering creativity, and figuring out how to survive this stage of life with the same sarcasm and resourcefulness that got us this far.

What About You?

What’s the hardest “midlife decision” you’ve had to make so far? Or, better yet, what’s the most ridiculous thing you worried about as a kid when you thought adulthood would be easy?

👉 Drop it in the comments. I need to know I’m not the only one sneezing my way into back pain and rethinking my entire life at 47.

Wild kids or not, we survived dial-up, Vanilla Ice, and Blockbuster late fees. There are no complaints in choosing to take this responsibility, nor are there complaints about needing to help care for my dad, friends, daughter’s friends…

But carrying everything means there’s nothing left for me. When I finish work, it’s straight into cooking, cleaning, helping with homework, or juggling the million other things that come with being a mom and a wife. Even when I sit down, I’m not resting—I’m just pausing long enough to think about what I need to do next.

The truth is, I don’t even know what proper “me time” would feel like. I have vague memories of lying on my bed as a teenager, blasting whatever music suited my mood, and writing angsty poetry, but now my idea of “me time” is sneaking off to the bathroom to play a quick game on my phone and locking the door before someone figures out where I am.

Creativity: A Lifeline in the Chaos

What I do know is this: When I make something—whether it’s a bowl on my lathe or a quick sketch on scrap paper—it reminds me that I exist outside of my responsibilities. That I’m more than a wife, a mom, or a provider.

Those moments aren’t long or quiet or perfect. Sometimes, I only get 15 minutes at the lathe before someone yells, “What’s for dinner?” or I have to stop because my kid can’t find their socks (even though I just washed them). But I’m working hard at remembering that even those 15 minutes matter.

It’s not about the amount of time—it’s about the act of creating. About giving myself permission to do something for me, even if it’s surrounded by noise. Because let’s be honest: The noise isn’t going anywhere.

The Hardest Lesson

Whether she realized it or not, the diabetic counselor wasn’t just talking about my physical health—she was talking about all of me. My mental health, my energy, my ability to be present for my family. She was right: If I don’t start taking care of myself, I won’t be there for the people I love.

But here’s the hardest part: Making myself a priority feels selfish. It feels like I’m breaking some unspoken rule of what it means to be a good mom and wife. (Where’s the handbook for this, and why didn’t it come with my flannel shirt in the 90s?)

I do know that it’s not selfish—it’s survival. I can’t pour from an empty cup, and right now, mine’s been running on fumes for too long. But guilt is a much stronger emotion.

Your Turn:

I know I’m not the only one who struggles with this. If you’ve ever felt like there’s no time or space for you, I want to hear from you:

How do you make space for yourself in a life that never stops?

What’s one thing you do that actually helps you recharge, even if it’s just for a few minutes?

Let’s start the conversation now about how we can all take better care of ourselves (mind, body, and soul)—even when it feels impossible. Bonus points if it involves 90s nostalgia, snacks, or a really good playlist. But get outta here with Richard Simmons VHS tapes right now. I’m not in the mood.

Share Coffee, Chaos, and Catharsis

I’m making a promise to myself: to take those 15-minute windows when I can, to create even when the house isn’t quiet, and to remind myself that I matter too.

Maybe it’s not the perfect version of self-care, but for now, it’s what I’ve got. I called my father to schedule a flight to help me pack up and wrote my resignation letter to the zoo.

I had zero clue what I’d be doing with myself.

Part of me thought I’d wait it out a bit and get a new zoo job once things settled down.

Another part of me thought I’d go back to school, maybe for the Master’s or Doctorate that I knew I needed in order to get to Africa.

And, well, things didn’t go according to any plan I had.

I worked several different jobs, trying to find the round hole my square peg self could fit into.

Eventually, in late 2002, I went to work for a local SEO company. They taught me most of the Black Hat SEO tricks in the book. I hated feeling ‘icky’ about what I was doing. One day, short of the six-month mark, they fired me. There was no unemployment for me.

I went to another local SEO company, and after they hired me, the owner and I were talking one day. She said that if she had known before hiring me that I’d worked for that other company, she wouldn’t have hired me.

Just over a year after I started, she sat me down and told me that she felt I needed to start my own company and do my own thing. She would support me in any way she could; unemployment would not be denied, and if I ever had questions or needed her to make connections for me, I just reached out. Never in my life had I felt so supported while being let go from a job! (Hint: THAT is what you call a true leader, by the way!)

So now we hit 2004, and I launched. I did pretty well, but if it hadn’t been for my childhood home, I’d have been in a van down by the river for the first few years.

By around 2005, I was so into blogging that I got hired to write for a blog network on not one, not two, but three sites. It was then that I also began what became a nearly six-year stint working beside Darren Rowse of ProBlogger fame.

Fast-forward to now — jumping over all the other clients, projects, successes, and disappointments… I feel like I am back at zero. I’m floundering, inconsistent, and doing all the things I’ve always taught my clients NOT to do.

None of this feels right to me.

Sure, I could bang out content, but you know what? It doesn’t light me up much anymore. It’s a bit therapeutic, yes. I’m pretty good at it after all these years.

But to be honest, doing that feels so forced that it makes me feel like a button-punching monkey spending my time making loads of money for other people and not enough for myself and my family. I really, really deserve better by now.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
